The Cold Cure

I would get sick at least once, usually twice a year. A sore throat would become a head cold then a chest cold and sometimes bronchitis.Salt

Here is how I broke that cycle and have kept cold-free for the last two years:

Gargle • Every morning gargle with hot salt water. Do it every day without fail, and increase to several times a day at the first indication of a sore throat.

Cretan FoodEat Smart • The people of Crete have the world’s lowest incidence of heart disease and cancer. For our overall health, we probably should eat like them. It’s easy: when you shop, buy fish, fruit, greens, beans, whole grains, olives and their oil, and red wine. Eliminate soft drinks – the regular kind have enough sugar to take down a rhino, and the diet kind are just colored, artificially-sweetened water with zero nutrional value. Drink water, cranberry and pomegranate juices (preferably organic, or at least with no sugars added) – they are good, and good for you.

Don’t Touch • Make a conscious effort not to touch your face. Don’t unnecessarily touch counters, door handles, and other surfaces in public places that are covered with the bugs that give you colds. Risk offending people by not shaking hands – when people extend their hand, bump fists instead.

HHBe Like Howard Hughes • Ok, his hygiene habits may have gotten the better of him, but he started with the right idea: keep your hands clean! Wash your hands throughout the day, keep a bottle of hand gel in your vehicle, office, and other places where soap and water are not convenient, use the hand cleaners many stores now provide, to wipe down the handle on your shopping cart, etc.

Supplement • I take a daily multivitamin and the following extracts: fish oil, garlic, and green tea. When I feel a sore throat coming on, I do Airborne twice a day.

Exercise • Do15-minutes of yoga first thing every morning, and do some kind of exercise regularly. Try to find an exercise that you enjoy and that does not require membership, travel, etc. Jogging or cycling are recommended. You’ll feel better, and you will resist and fight colds more effectively.
